Account book, 1823-1845.

This account book documents the business practices from 1823-1845 of Robert Jenkins, owner of the Windsor Forge in Caernarvon Township, near Churchtown, Lancaster County, PA. This manuscript begins as a daybook, recording daily sales of forged iron items such as crowbars, scallops, horseshoes, wagon tires, ploughs, pump handles, etc. Also included are copies and drafts of business letters to and from Robert Jenkins concerning the purchase of raw materials, most notably pig metal, and reminders of payment due Jenkins by his customers. Apparently the business was quite a large operation as evidenced by the numerous entries for large amounts of wood cut from various lots to fuel the furnaces, the number of rental agreements for employee housing, and the survey of Jenkins' property. There are references to "our mill" (p. 41) and several tables of the amounts of hay and grains such as corn, wheat, oats, and rye that were harvested from various fields. There are also rules for measuring corn. Entries show that Jenkins apparently subcontracted his employees to build roads and bridges for the township and the reversed p. 51 documents the cost of materials for building a house in 1843.
